Napa Valley residents Chris Oggenfuss, director of marketing at CADE Estate, PlumpJack Estate, and Odette Estate wineries; Catherine Seda, account executive at Balzac Communications & Marketing; and Jürg Oggenfuss, wine coordinator and educator at Joseph Phelps Winery will officially launch the Napa Valley Wine Academy this week.
Mauri Yeast and Pacific Coast Chemicals released a new, dry wine yeast selected for its ability to enhance aromas in white wines. According to Mauri Yeast, the strain Maurivin UOA MaxiThiol is a new one developed at the University of Auckland. The yeast reportedly ferments well at cooler temperatures between 54-59 F, has moderate nitrogen needs and can tolerate 14-15% alcohol. Mauri claims the yeast “will bring significant fruit esters of ‘tropical fruit’ and passion fruit’ to the finished wine.” Details: maurivin.com, pcchem.com
iCropTrak version 3, scheduled for release at the end of January in the Apple App Store, expands available GIS data management features to allow vineyard block boundary and infrastructure maps to be managed entirely from the field. New capabilities allow users to digitize by drawing directly on the screen of an iPad or iPhone to create new block boundary information or add multiple data layers to the displayed map information, according to a statement released by iCrop. Lascar Electronics introduced its new EL-Enviropad-TC thermometer for spot temperature reading. The new product offers built-in data logging and graphing functions to store and interpret readings taken with a K-type probe included with the unit. Lascar reports the unit can store more than 65,000 readers in CSV format that can be downloaded to a PC via a USB connection. The unit works with any J, K, N and T-type thermocouple. The new Power Swap System from Newcastle Systems enables the company’s NB Series Mobile Powered Workstations to operate 24 hours a day with no break for recharging. Designed to run computers, printers, scales, testers, barcode scanners, and other electronic hardware, the workstations provide AC power without extension cords or ceiling drops. A depleted battery can be swapped with a fully charged one quickly, and the spent battery can be recharged at a standard wall outlet. Senova Systems, Inc., has launched its new pHit Scanner pH meter that does not need to be calibrated by the user, doesn’t employ fragile glass probes and can be stored dry. The company’s proprietary probe technology has a range of 2 to 12 pH, a pH unit resolution of .01 and an integrated temperature range of 5 to 50 C. In addition to the base sensor, the company also has a “micro” version for taking measurements of small samples and a sensor at the end of a flexible tube to measure the pH of samples in hard to reach areas.  Cascade Corp.'s wine barrel handler is designed to work in a cave or narrow aisle areas. The unit enables a lift truck driver to grab a barrel from a stack, lower it to the ground or move it to a different location. A 180-degree swinging fork assembly mounted on a full-width traversing frame allows the driver to pick up a barrel from either the left- or the right-hand side of a narrow aisle.  Eaton Corp., announced it would present its expanded range of filtration systems for winemaking as well as single-source filtration products at the upcoming Unified Wine & Grape Symposium. In a statement, the company highlighted its Becopad depth filter sheets and Becodisc cartridges for wine filtration. The pads are designed for plate and frame filters and can be washed and sterilized repeatedly. The discs “combine the benefits of depth filter sheets with a sterile filtration environment” and provide “optimal protection of the membrane cartridge during the wine filling process.” Details: eaton.com
 Sensorex’s new CX-3000 transmitter monitors changes in fluids and displays conductivity, resistivity or salinity, along with temperature, for process control in water, food production, wastewater and other applications. According to a statement by Sensorex, a simple push button interface enables user-programming on-site for desired monitoring with simultaneous temperature monitoring. Conductivity is measured over an extended range of 0.000uS/cm – 200mS/cm for extreme applications.  Sonoma Cast Stone has unveiled new additions to its line of concrete wine tanks. The “tea cup” is a 200-gallon, open top tank. Optional features include a round base for greater stability as well as hoist rings on the top rim and a tilt/hoist ring on the side for dumping. Another new tank option is the small, 200-gallon “wine stacks” that are rectangular tanks designed for either fermentation or storage. The stacks have removable lids and can be equipped with optional concrete baffles to provide more concrete to wine contact as well as truly baffle wine movement in the event of an earthquake, according to Sonoma Cast Stone.
