This year's Rhone Rangers San Francisco Grand Tasting, held Mar. 18 at Fort Mason Center, drew more trade attendees than the previous year--1,221 compared to 887--while bringing in fewer consumers. Only 720 consumers attended the 2007 tasting, down from 911 the previous year. Combined trade and consumer attendance for the 2007 tasting totaled 1,941, up 143 over the combined total for 2006.

According to Rhone Rangers executive director Rusty Eddy, consumer attendance may have been affected by a combination of events, including San Francisco's annual St. Patrick's Day celebrations--held the night before the Rhone Rangers tasting--and a large anti-war rally held in the city on Mar. 18.

The "Anarchy" shirt worn by winemaker Christian Tietje of Four Vines Winery, Paso Robles, promoted his wine of the same name. He also poured wines called Peasant, Phoenix and Heretic. There was quite a line at his table. Maybe it was the irreverent temporary tattoos he was administering?
More than 120 wineries participated in the San Francisco tasting, including 30 new winery members. New California members included: Arroyo Robles Winery, Paso Robles; Blue Cellars, Soledad; Blue Moon Wines, Walnut Creek; Bugay Vineyards, Santa Rosa; Calix Cellars, St. Helena; CORE Wine, Santa Maria; Edward Sellers Vineyards & Wines, Paso Robles; Four Vines Winery, Paso Robles; Kokomo Wines, Healdsburg; Kit Fox Vineyards, Burlingame; L'Aventure Winery, Paso Robles; Martinelli Winery, Windsor; Moss Creek Winery, Napa; New Clairvaux Vineyard, Vina; Peltier Station, Lockeford; Peterson Winery, Healdsburg; Redline Wines, Templeton; Savannah-Chanelle Vineyards, Saratoga; Spicerack Vineyards, San Anselmo; Terlato Family Vineyards, Healdsburg; Terry Hoage Vineyards, Paso Robles; Vie Winery, Kelseyville and Volante Vineyards, Santa Rosa. One new winery member from Oregon joined the 2007 tasting: Volcano Vineyards, Bend, Ore.

In addition to the Grand Tasting, Rhone Rangers held a Winemaker Barbeque & Auction on Mar. 17 and a Rhône Wine Seminar focusing on boutique Syrah and Rhône rosé wines on Mar. 18.

The Rhone Rangers Northwest Grand Tasting, in Seattle, is scheduled for July 10-11.
