Sacramento, Calif. -- California winegrape growers helped raise thousands of dollars to fund scholarships for vineyard employees' children March 4, when a fundraising dinner offered growers the opportunity to mingle with state lawmakers in Sacramento.

The California Wine Grape Growers Foundation (CWGGF) hosted the Capitol Wine Dinner at the Sutter Club, with attendees raising a total of $37,985 for the foundation's scholarship program.

"This was the most successful dinner event to date. The money raised at this event translates directly to more scholarships for graduating seniors whose parents are vineyard employees," said Ben Drake, CWGGF's chairman. "There are so many deserving young people out there. The more money we can raise, the more help we can give them in reaching their educational goals."

The dinner honored Andy Hoxsey, managing partner of the Napa Wine Co., for his contributions to the foundation.

The foundation awards at least six scholarships per year, with two of the awards allotting $1,000 per year for four years for vineyard workers' children attending a school in the University of California or California State University systems. Four $500-per-year scholarships are awarded to students attending state community colleges.

Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio--Winery owners and marketing directors from 13 central and eastern states gathered April 1-3 on the chilly shore of Lake Erie for a "License to Steal"--to steal marketing ideas, that is--from each other and from experts on the subject. The conference drew 117 people to The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake in northeastern Ohio. They found that organizer Donniella Winchell, executive director of the Ohio Wine Producers Association, was not kidding about the conference's title.

Audrey and Dick Naylor, Pennsylvania vintners and wine packaging suppliers.
For example, Jim Trezise, president of the New York Wine & Grape Foundation, openly offered up much of his group's marketing material to be copied and rebranded by other organizations. Mark Winchell, who heads the local Ashtabula County Convention & Visitors Bureau, detailed his co-op advertising program for wineries.

Marketing consultant Bill Geist of Madison, Wis., said all Americans want a status lifestyle. "They want to be able to say, 'I've been someplace you haven't been.'"

David Neilson owns Coastal Vineyards in South Dartmouth, Mass.
Danene Beedle, marketing specialist for the Missouri Wine & Grape Board, presented her state's "Norton Says" marketing campaign, which seeks to put the underappreciated red varietal into the mainstream.

Patti Held-Uthlaut of Stone Hill Winery in Missouri, Ken Hlavek of the Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake, Trezise of New York, and Stephanie Rhodes of the Shawnee Wine Trail in southern Illinois spoke on wine trails, and media representatives discussed approaching editors with story ideas.
