The 2013 Eastern Winery Exposition will feature 160-180 exhibitors, up from 135 at the March 2012 show (above.)
Lancaster, Pa.—With the number of exhibitors already topping the 2012 total, and advance registrations ahead of where they were at this time last year, the 2013 edition of the Eastern Winery Exposition looks bigger and better than the inaugural event this past March.

The exposition, which will be held March 6-7 at the Lancaster County Convention Center in Lancaster, Pa., is an eastern-focused wine industry trade show and conference designed specifically to provide wineries and vineyards in the eastern United States and Canada with an affordable and easily accessible professional meeting.

Bob Mignarri, the show manager, told Wines & Vines that the exhibit area has been expanded and the trade show will feature 160-180 exhibitors, up from 135 in 2012. The number of sessions has increased, and more that 90% of the speakers will be new to the conference. According to conference manager Richard Leahy, the majority of the speakers will continue to be from the east and focus on a program most relevant to the eastern grape and wine industry.

As with last year, sessions will be divided into four categories: enology, viticulture, money/management/marketing and newcomers to the business. March 8 will bring two workshops: an all-day New Grower Workshop presented by Dr. Joe Fiola from the University of Maryland and a half-day Hard Cider Workshop presented by Mark Chien of Penn State.

Advance registration indicates significant interest in the hard cider workshop. The first session will include varieties and styles; the second will be about yeasts, production and stabilization; the third session covers ice cider, and the final session will include legal and label regulations, apple varieties and production techniques as well as a tasting of ice ciders from New York, Vermont and Canada.

Some highlights of the two-day program will include two sessions about energy savings in the winery presented by Dr. Bruce Zoecklein as well as a panel discussion led by Art Hunt; new technologies in the vineyard including high tunnels for vineyards presented by Dr. Richard Carey; vine size, vine capacity, crop load and vine balance by Dr. Alan Lakso, and turning customers into brand ambassadors by Patty Held. Altogether, there will be 19 sessions during the two days presented by many people familiar in the eastern wine scene including Peter Bell, Lucie Morton, Peter Oldak, Richard Olsen-Harbich and Tom Payette.

Other scheduled events include a March 5 welcome wine reception, the second annual EWE industry celebration dinner March 6th and buffet lunches on both the 6th and 7th. Fundraising activities for the scholarship fund of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture-Eastern Section will include a repeat of the 50-50 raffle held last year.

Wines & Vines is the official sponsor of the Eastern Winery Exposition. Supporting sponsors, consisting of wine-related organizations, have increased in number from 11 last year to 16, and for the first time two New York State wine trails have joined. Members of the supporting sponsor organizations, the names of which are listed on the Exposition’s website, are entitled to a discount on their registration passes.
