Other parts of North America are potentially at risk, too. Many of us are prepared to some degree. Nearly everyone in a long swath of Chile’s wine regions—from Casablanca, Colchagua and Maule to Bio-Bio—felt the impact of the quake personally or professionally. From the tasting room to the cellar and barrel storage, wineries hurried to assess business losses. Though the cleanup took only days, projects to rebuild infrastructure, equipment, storage and their communities will take much longer. Chilean vintners were happy to share their experiences with their American counterparts and impart information about how to prepare for earthquakes and minimize winery losses.

Less than four years after the magnitude 5.0 Yountville earthquake in Northern California, it reminded the wine industry yet again that earthquakes are not only a recurrent fact in California, but they are often devastating…. The greatest amount of financial loss and business interruption to the wineries was due to toppled and damaged wine barrels….
