Founded in 1984, Graeser offered tasting and vineyard tours.

Calistoga, Calif. -- Richard L. Graeser Winery just outside Calistoga on the “back” side of Diamond Mountain has closed. Former owner Richard Graeser says that he couldn’t make the mortgage payments with the downturn in the economy. He says the mortgage holder is attempting to sell the property.

Graeser started the winery in 1984 on property he inherited. Because of the winery’s age, the open tour and tasting permit for the 2,500-case winery was grandfathered in. He will be leading wine classes and blending sessions that will be held at Silo’s and Napa General Storestarting next week.

I feel sorry for people like myself that were charged for wine that was never delivered.

Having been a three-year apprentice winemaker at a small winery that was shuttered in July of 2010, my heart goes out to Richard Graeser. For me, losing the winery felt like a cross between death and divorce. It was terribly painful. It must be especially so for Richard because the winery was on inherited property.
