More than 6,000 lightning strikes sparked 2,000 fires in 26 California counties June 20.

When a thunderstorm rolls in, Marie Greenhall, a U.S. Forest Service lookout, can't keep track of all the lightning. Because cloud-to-ground lightning bursts ignite 70% of all western wildfires, she plots the direction and distance of strikes that singe the woodlands within a 60-mile radius of Anthony Peak.
