The Caterpillar Challenger (above) is fitted with a Vibrosoiler vibrating ripper and mounder.
It is springtime in the Salinas Valley, and a half-dozen vineyard managers have gathered around a soil ripper the size of a freighter. They watch as a brightly painted tractor lumbers across a broccoli field, grappling the earth with two 30-foot-long tread belts that are as tall as a grown man.
