Andrew Rice, creative director of Trinchero Family Estates, will moderate a design panel at the Wines & Vines Packaging Conference on Aug. 19.

Napa, Calif.—An all-star panel of package designers will show and tell what’s new in materials and design at the Wines & Vines Packaging Conference on Aug. 19. Andrew Rice, the creative director of Trinchero Family Estates, will moderate the presentation by three designers who have created successful packages for Meiomi, Ramey, Honig, Jackson Family and many other wineries.

The panel presentation will be one of five conference sessions and two special tasting sessions planned for the one-day meeting and trade show in the former Copia building in Napa, Calif. The designers will speak following the keynote talk by Joseph Wagner, the creator of the Meiomi brand that was recently acquired by Constellation Brands for $315 million.

Not coincidentally, one panelist, Tony Auston of Auston Design Group in Emeryville, Calif., designed the Meiomi package and many others for such producers as Bogle Vineyards, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and Joseph Phelps Vineyards. Joining him will be Jim Moon of Jim Moon Designs in Mill Valley, Calif., who includes Honig, Benton Lane and Tres Sabores wineries among his clients, and Jeff Hester of Cult Partners in Oakland, Calif., who has worked with Constellation Brands, E. & J. Gallo and Williams-Sonoma, to name a few.

As moderator, Andrew Rice will put the designers through their paces, discussing the “(Almost) Unbelievable Advances in Materials and Design” they have seen or are using for their clients, including bottle tops, labels and bottle printing as well as glass.

Immediately following the panel discussion, registrants can participate in a new interactive hour including a “speed date” with one of the three panelists and several other professional design experts. Registrants will also enjoy a new sparkling wine showcase with tasting and are eligible to vote for the best entries in a wine packaging competition.

The Wines & Vines Packaging Conference is intended for winery personnel including owners, winemakers, sales and marketing directors, purchasing managers, bottling line supervisors and others. Conference sessions, breakfast, lunch, a targeted trade show and wine reception are all included in the $199 registration fee.

Other sessions and speakers will address quality control during bottling and natural cork selection. A special presentation by Nielsen Design Solutions will explore the intimate connection between package design and brand image based on exclusive new consumer research conducted specifically for the conference.

Optional tasting sessions in the morning and afternoon will present tasting trials that explore the sensory differences between bottled wine and kegged wine, mature Pinot Noir in natural cork vs. screwcap, and show the effects that lax quality control during bottling can have on shelf life.

The conference is now in it second year, and the inaugural event drew 350 attendees. For more information and to register, visit wvpack.com, or contact events@winesandvines.com, (866) 453-9701, ext. 102.
