Pinot pioneer Bynum dies
Healdsburg, Calif.—Davis Bynum who started producing Pinot Noir wine in 1965 died Dec. 3 at the age of 92. According to a report in the Santa Rosa, Calif., newspaper The Press Democrat, Bynum moved production of his wine to property on Westside Road near Healdsburg, Calif., in 1973. He is credited with helping to build the Russian River Valley area as a premier source of Pinot Noir grapes, and his Rochioli Vineyards Pinot was one of the valley’s first vineyard designates. Bynum retired in 2007 and sold his brand to the Klein family who also own Rodney Strong Vineyards. He was preceded in death by his first wife and survived by his wife Virginia Bynum, son, daughter and four grandchildren.
