Sonoma Valley's George MacLeod dies at 96

Sonoma, Calif.—George MacLeod, one of the early leaders of a revitalized Sonoma Valley wine industry died Jan. 21 at the age of 96. MacLeod purchased a 50-acre ranch above Kenwood, Calif., in 1974, and the property would come to be known Indian Springs Ranch and would later support MacLeod Family Vineyard winery that opened in 2005. MacLeod helped establish the Sonoma Valley Vintners & Growers Alliance and was the group’s first president. In 2015, he was inducted into the Sonoma Valley Vintners & Growers Alliance Hall of Fame. MacLeod’s foray into the wine business came after successful careers in the oil and technology industries as well as service in the U.S. Army during World War II. MacLeod is survived by his wife of 69 years Greta, four children, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
