Winemaker David Stevens dies
Napa, Calif.—Winemaker David Stevens died April 10 of natural causes at his home in Napa County. Stevens was 57. According to his obituary published in the Napa Valley Register newspaper, Stevens was born and raised in Walla Walla, Wash., where his father was an economics professor at Whitman College. Stevens graduated from Williams College in 1983 with a degree in economics.
It was at Williams that he met his future wife Susan and they married in 1987. After teaching middle school science in Maine while Susan was a medical student, they moved Davis, Calif., where Stevens attended the University of California, Davis and earned a master's degree in viticulture and enology.
In addition to working as a winemaker, at Bouchaine Vineyards, Domaine Chandon and Freemark Abbey, Stevens taught at UC Davis and Napa Valley College. In 2003, Stevens established his own consulting firm, Davon International, concentrating on wine production. For many years, he judged at wine competitions. He is survived by his wife Susan and two daughters.
A memorial service will be held at St Mary's Episcopal Church, 1917 3rd St., in Napa on Saturday, April 21 at 11 a.m.
