Pumps are necessary to perform a variety of winemaking tasks, making them an invaluable piece of equipment in the cellar. Wines & Vines contacted pump manufacturers about popular or new pumps for transferring wine, performing pumpovers, filling and emptying barrels and other functions. Prices vary based on pump model and dealer options such as carts and control panels.

Inoxpa
The RVN centrifugal pump by Inoxpa is designed for fluids with some solids, making it a popular choice for pumpovers. Available in three models of varying capacity, the RVN operates with a helicoidel impeller that can provide up to 790 gallons per minute of flow with the largest model. The RVN pumps feature a single, mechanical seal with stationary and rotary parts made of silicon carbide and EPDM gaskets.

US-FIP
US-FIP unveiled its Bowpeller pump at the Unified Wine & Grape Symposium in January. The Bowpeller is a patented low-shear centrifugal pump designed for gentle movement. Described by the manufacturer as “a dramatic improvement” over standard centrifugal designs, the pump’s helical pulls wine toward the back of the pump while accelerating it outward at an angle much less than 90 degrees. The longer, flatter path for the wine allows for gentler movement.

Xylem
Xylem put a self-priming flexible impeller pump, FIP, with a maximum capacity of 60 gallons per minute in its VeraFlex Pump Cart that was designed for craft beverage producers. The Jabsco pump features 2-inch ports and can be turned down to 250 rpm to provide gentle pumping action. The pump comes equipped with a stainless steel cart and rheostat for speed control.

Mouvex
Mouvex touts its SLS Series seal-less drive eccentric disc pumps as the ideal pumping solution for a wide variety of wine-production applications. Designed without seals, the pumps offer a leak-free operation with what the company calls “exceptional” volumetric efficiency, even with variable viscosities and pressures. Mouvex pumps also feature self-priming and dry-run capabilities, a strong vacuum and compression effect that allows for line stripping and a low shear rate for gentle product handling with no emulsification or exposure to oxygen.

Vogelsang
The “turnkey” wine cart pump by Vogelsang features the company’s “HiFlo” rotary lobe system that is designed to provide movement without any pulsation and is warranted against damage from running dry for up to 30 minutes. The pump is wet, self-priming and provides 66-gpm flows. Vogelsang says the pump’s minimal liquid shear makes it ideal for long pumpovers. The included 316 stainless-steel cart is equipped with 50 feet of power cable and quick connect flanges.

SPX
Waukesha Cherry-Burrell, a brand of pumps from SPX, offers both positive displacement and centrifugal pumps for cellar operations. The centrifugal pumps provide maximum flows of 140 to 550 gpm, depending on the pump size, and the positive-displacement pumps offer max flows of 30 to 60 gpm. Available through Carlsen & Associates, the pumps come equipped with stainless steel carts, variable frequency drive, 50 feet of power cord and a remote control.

Wilden
Wilden’s new Saniflo Hygienic Series of diaphragm pumps features the company’s Pro-Flow SHIFT, which the supplier claims can pump more product per cubic foot per minute with 60% less air consumption that other diaphragm pumps on the market. The Saniflo pumps are available in 316 stainless steel and nickel-plated aluminum in 38 mm (1-1.5 inch), 51 mm (2 inch) and 76 mm (3 inch) sizes and feature maximum flows to 223 gpm.

Yamada
Yamada recently updated the air valve mechanism on its line of NDP double-diaphragm air pumps that can provide maximum capacities of 30 to 200 gpm of flow. The seal rings on the Yamada pumps feature a new carbon fiber fill that provides more durability, and for pumps sized 1-3 inches the seals are now comprised of one piece of material to reduce air “blow-by” and increase air pressure efficiency. The supplier contends its air pumps are gentler than other pump mechanisms because the fluid is discharged from the liquid chamber in a gentle manner that does not agitate the fluid itself, causing foaming. Available on carts through Carlsen & Associates.
