Flash Offers Take a Big Dive
Because of fewer offers by some of the major flash resellers, the total number of offers for domestic wines in May fell 43% compared to the same time last year. In previous years, Invino has offered hundreds of wines during Memorial Day sales events but this past May the website offered just 44 domestic wines. During Memorial Day weekend last year, the website made 279 offers. Wines Til Sold Out made 70 domestic offers in May 2016 and only 45 this year.

As offers have declined overall, so too have those for wines from Napa County wineries. Napa typically has the largest share of offers in the flash segment. Of the 5,975 offers in the past 12 months, Napa’s 2,299 offers account for 38% of the total. Compared to 2016, however, those offers are down 2% from 2,347.


Offers for wines from Napa County wineries with a flash price of less than $30 fell 16% from 1,491 to 1,259. The higher end did see growth, as offers for wines with flash prices more than $30 rose from 856 in 2016 to 1,040 in the past 12 months. Offers with flash prices of more than $50 grew by 29% over the previous year.


Cabernet Sauvignon and red blends made up 59% of all the Napa County offers. The number of Cabernet offers increased 12% from the previous year to 948. Flash resellers offered less Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc from Napa wineries in the past 12 months as the total offers fell by 47% and 63% respectively.

Each offer is reviewed and tied to the source winery, and the specific details are recorded in a database of flash offers.

When flash websites hold special events with a high number of offers, Wines Vines Analytics monitors the site closely, often capturing a new offer every few minutes. At the close of each month, the offers are reviewed for accuracy, and the findings are reported by Wines & Vines’ editorial staff for the current month along with time-series comparisons of pricing, winery size and wine types.
