Pest management event is Nov. 30
California Certified Organic Farmers and Cal Poly's Sustainable Agriculture Resource Consortium are organizing the Sixth Annual Sustainable Agriculture Pest Management conference, to be held Nov. 30-Dec. 2 in San Luis Obispo. Presentations will include Organic Compliance, Crop Insurance and an Invasive Species Update, among many others. Continuing Education Units are available. Lange is Ag Leadership chair
Randall Lange, co-founder of Lange Twins Winery and Vineyards, was elected chairman of the California Agricultural Leadership Foundation board of directors. Staglin event raised $4 million
The 13th Annual Staglin Family Music Festival for Mental Health in Napa, held at Staglin Family Vineyard in Rutherford on Sept. 8, raised a record $4,038,850 for mental health research. Gladys Knight was this year's headliner.

Wood joins Shannon Ridge
Shannon Ridge Winery, Lake County, named Mike Wood its new director of wine production. Previously, Wood was with Langtry Estate & Vineyards.

Aaron Pott was appointed winegrower at Blackbird Vineyards, Napa Valley. Previously, he was with Quintessa and Saint Clement.

Napa Vintners hire marketing director
The Napa Valley Vintners named Bettina Sichel director of marketing. She's worked for Huneeus Vintners, Quintessa and Estancia.

Clos Pepe wins Green Award
In honor of its leadership in sustainable agriculture and production, Clos Pepe, Santa Rita Hills, was the sole member of the Santa Barbara County wine industry to win a 2007 Green Award. Among its sustainable practices: no insecticides, herbicides or restricted materials; Old English Babydoll Southdown sheep control weeds, owls and raptors catch rodents; beneficial insects reduce pests. Cleavage Creek backs cancer research
Cleavage Creek Cellars, Napa Valley, released its first wines under the ownership of Budge Brown. Brown, whose wife Arlene died of breast cancer in 2005, purchased the brand and will contribute 10% of gross wine receipts to breast cancer research. The Cabernet, Petite Sirah, Cabernet/Syrah, Merlot, Merlot/Shiraz and Chardonnay, plus Secret Red and Secret White, feature breast cancer survivors on the labels. AVF to administer scholarships
The American Vineyard Foundation agreed to manage the André Tchelistcheff and Dr. Richard Peterson Scholarship funds on behalf of the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. The scholarships are offered to students of viticulture and enology in the University of California system. Both scholarships accept applications in May of each year; scholarships are announced in August. For details and application forms, visit avf.org.

Peterson directs sales at Russian Hill
John Peterson was named director of sales at Russian Hill Estate Winery, Windsor. Previously, he was private label sales manager at Delicato Family Vineyards.

Cline adopts 'extended text' label
Sonoma's Cline Cellars adopted a new multi-panel back label that consumers can open, read and re-seal. The multi-part label has three extra panels. Cline uses the fold-out label exclusively for marketing text; it could also be used to incorporate additional regulatory information, such as a "nutrition facts" chart.

Arthur Palombo died Sept. 17
Arthur J. Palombo, who began his 35-year wine career in the 1950s with Schenley Distillers, was vice president of sales at E. & J. Gallo Winery; was president of Paul Masson Vineyards and Browne Vintners for Joseph E. Seagram & Sons; and founded Cannon Wines Limited in 1987. He died at 84. The family suggests donations to the national Parkinson Foundation or the American Cancer Society.
