Arista buys Martinelli vineyard

The McWilliams family, owners of Arista Winery in the Russian River Valley, purchased the historic 74-acre Martinelli Road Vineyard from Joseph Martinelli, adding to their 36 acres of estate vineyards. Planted to five acres of Zinfandel, 10 acres of Chardonnay and three acres of Pinot Noir, the vineyard site has been continuously farmed since the 1870s. Details: aristawinery.com.

Amador Vintners boost marketing efforts
The Amador Vintners Association forged two new relationships for marketing and member relations. The group retained Lee Hodo-Four Tier Communications to oversee marketing for the region, and Jennifer Pechette is the association’s new director. Pechette will work out of the association’s office in Plymouth and is responsible for member relations, office administration and coordinating marketing efforts. Details: amadorwine.com.

Heredia now winemaker at Gary Farrell
Theresa Heredia is the new winemaker at Gary Farrell Winery. The former winemaker at Freestone Vineyards in Sonoma County, Heredia has experience crafting cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as well as small-lot, single-vineyard wines. Gary Farrell Winery specializes in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Russian River Valley. Details: garyfarrellwines.com.

Garvey named Napa grower of the year
The Napa Valley Grape­growers named Patrick Garvey the 2012 Napa Valley Grower of the Year. Garvey served as the group’s president from 1992 to 1994 and helped create the Oakville and Rutherford appellations. Garvey came to the Napa Valley in 1978 and owns and manages more than 600 acres of vineyards.

UC Davis marketing program
UC Davis Extension and the UC Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology will present a marketing program July 16-27. Members of the American wine and grape industry will discuss how to create a brand and market wine. The program costs $2,000 for the full two-week course; weekly and daily enrollment also is available. Details: extension.ucdavis.edu/winemaking.
